Can you jump start an automatic renault laguna V6?

I have heard that it could damage the computer, which affects the gears, PAS, etc. Have had conflicting professional opinions.

No you can not jump start an automatic by pushing it or towing..  All the hand books for automatic cars say the same.  If your car won't start because the battery is flat then you can use jump leads to start the engine.

no you cannot jump start an automatic.

if you ever did the damage could be very expensive because automatic gearboxes work with something similar to hydraulic pressure to change the gears and it tends to break the master change system.

don't try it unless you want an expensive repair!

you can damage computers and such with a careless spark from jump leads, so you may want to use a battery charger. I have never had any problem jumping cars, but given how bad french electrics are, caveat emptor!

You should be fine with jump leads - just make sure that they are correctly earthed to the car's body. Do not try to bump start it.

If the batteries definitely the problem for non starting then you could try charging it for a while (out the vehicle obviously) or if the batteries no longer chargeable then consider a replacement. Will definitely save a bit of expense of something going wrong when jump starting.

I was always told to use jump leads by connecting the positive leads 1st from one battery terminal to the other on the dead battery,then connecting the negative on the charged battery to a suitable earthing point on the "dead" cars engine.

This is supposed to protect the delicate computer electronics from power spikes while charging the dead battery.

You could damage any cars computer by not doing it correctly. If you can manage to do it correctly, the car will have no idea its own battery is dead.
