We were considering keeping one or two horses in our backyard.. We have enough land but our yard gently slopes downwards..It has two flat landings, and it is flat on top of the hill. I think horses are okay on slopes, but I wanted to make sure..

  1. as long as the loffing barn is level and there is 1 level spot u shood be ok

  2. Yeah they should be fine. One of my friends lives on massive hills and nearly all her paddocks are on slopes. You just have to be carefull with the younger horses that their tendons don't bow cause of the slopes.

Iv seen a few horses that we're raised on slopes and legs are far from straight.

If you have flat spots you should be fine.

  3. gentle slopes are not an issue. there are flat areas so they will be alright. if you are worried they will slip and fall when it gets muddy.... horses arent dumb, they will know where they can and cannot safely run around in the mud. if not, it needs to only happen once and they will know running down a hill full speed on mud is NOT very pleasant.

  4. yeah, my fields are set up like that and mine did okay, only thing you'll have to watch out for is mud and sliding. we closed off a part of our hill (the bad part) when it got bad in the winter.

the other thing you may have to watch out for, it happened with my mare who was getting older. is she'd start rolling, and then flip over and roll on the other side, but when she'd go to get up she'd get caught too close to the fence and we'd have to go help her up. it may have been because she was older, and the slight angle down and then the fence may have not helped either.

but over all if you watch for mud and slipping then you should be fine.

  5. As long as they can get to some level ground then I don't see a problem.
