I recently bought some chickens. I asked the woman for hens so we could have fresh eggs and we could keep them all together. Instead we got a pair of Silkies, one hen and one rooster, and a pair of Bantems both roosters. The Bantems were very young when I bought them so it is possible that the seller did not know, but now I don't know if they can all stay in the same 'coop'

They are all in a small area a lot of the time but I am concerned that the roosters will become territorial, is that true or is it just a myth?

  3. Keeping multiple roosters is a challenge,no one is prepared to be watchful & play the role of protector all day. With limited space problems are compounded .

Choose the one that suits you best ,taking looks, colour & breed into consideration if you are planning to breed your birds ,temprament should be considered for the well being of  the other birds ,Next comes the difficult task of culling the spare roosters ,but a task that has to be undertaken just the same.

  4. Roosters are VERY VERY territorial! ! ! !

I had one rooster who literally acted like he didn't want another rooster around. . . .PERIOD.  Fights he would get into were extremely BRUTAL so I eventually had to get rid of him.

I have had 3 roosters together in my pen with my hens but their fight for dominance was not so brutal and they did establish who was "The c**k of the Walk" as the saying goes and once that was established there was virtially NO fighting.

I am currently raising up some chicks and not sure of their s*x though I think I have atleast 2 up and coming roosters as they are only about 2wks old and already jumpiing up at each other much like roosters do when fighting for dominance.

I am thinking that if raised together they will establish their dominance much easier and quicker but I guess only time will tell.

Bantams are worse at fighting. . hence the saying "fights like a little Bannie rooster" so I think I would keep them apart or get rid of the extra roosters. . . getting another hen or two will not help but may encourage more fighting.

  5. It depends on a lot of things. First off is if they are free range chickens then no problems. If they are in a lot there will be spats but no real problems. I have never found a rooster that has natural spurs that would fight till one or the other is dead. Once they get used to each other they won't pay any attention to each other. You might have to get them used to each other.
