Can you knock down a partition wall if its only a stud wall? with out getting a builder to do it?

Just make sure it's not a load bearing wall and check for utilities first.

If it is only a partition wall you can remove it.  be sure to check for electrical and plumbing first.  cut a small hole to check, or carefully remove one side of wall board.

Sure.  Be prepared for a tremendous mess.  Consider buying a reciprocating saw if you don't have one, makes demolition much faster and easier.
