Can you lay hardwood straight on top of vinyl?

I am replacing all flooring in my house with hardwood(nail down).

I have vinyl in kitchen and carpet upper level. do I need to remove vinyl for hardwood?

  1. You really should remove the vinyl, so that the new floor will lay down correctly.


  2. I can't think of any reason that it would need to be removed other then the small amount of added height.

  3. Hello, as long as the vinyl is flat, and the floor is level, install away! The only preparation you may what to consider is locating the floor joist to enable you to nail into them at least occasionally, and space your nailing pattern every 6-8 inches apart. Good luck and I hope this helps.
