  1. I know all of these answers on here are all about teachers but you can teach yourself these things if you have discipline. If I were you I would by some kind of instructional DVD. Just save up and start there. Thats how I started. The most important thing is to get down the basics. Such as how you hold the guitar, how you should sit while you are playing, proper hand positioning, proper guitar positioning and how to get the most out of both hands. Its not that hard to learn. You could always get guitar tabs from the internet which is easier to play that getting the music notes. The rest is just you practicing. If you ever need help let me know. I can teach you some pointers.

  2. My friend was 13 when he started teaching himself on an ELECTRIC guitar,he is VERY good!If he used an electric one, then you sure can teach yourself with a classical one! :D

  3. yeah you can teach yourself anything... of course, with a teacher things will be alot easier... but it's possible alone...

go to your local music store and look for music books entitled things like "Teach Yourself Classical Guitar."

I have done this with my bass and I learned alot of theory that way.

  4. CLASSICAL guitar is ALL ABOUT TECHNIQUE... and that takes a TEACHER... you can't learn proper TECHNIQUE on your own... There is a lot more to playing guitar then just knowing a few notes and the names of chords...

Generally, people who think they can teach theirself to play guitar for FREE off the Internet... have a FOOL for a student.

  5. Depending on what you already know.

I don't recommend it.  You can learn a lot by talking to and sitting down with those who do play, your just not paying for it.

One of my favorite quotes is "The self taught player has no one to blame but himself"

  6. IF you wanted to learn folk or rock or blues guitar, I would say "maybe".  The physical technique of how to play in those styles is a lot more informal -- "whatever works for you" that lets you play what you want without hurting yourself.

But for classical guitar, correct technique is EVERYTHING to learning the instrument -- and I'm convinced you can't learn correct posture, hand position, correct finger placement, etc etc -- from a book or video. You MUST have a teacher to coach you, one on one, and guide you from the very beginning.

Quite frankly, I'm not even sure if there are videos or DVD's available that teach classical music on guitar -- I've seen LOTS of guitar tutorials for other styles of music -- folk, bluegrass, rock, blues, jazz, etc -- but never for classical.

Bottom line -- you have to decide which is more important -- teaching yourself to play the guitar, in which case you'll learn either rock or folk or whatever other style of music -- or learning to play classical music on guitar, in which case you WILL need lessons with a teacher.
