I recently got back from Cancun and you can leave the resort there and go to different clubs and bars every night. I was wondering if there are clubs and bars in DR that you can go to or if you are just supposed to stay on the resort. Thanks for any info.

  1. This is soooo silly.  I think the biggest mistake anyone can make is to NOT leave the resort (actually even booking one is silly in my opinion - there are plenty of nice small hotels to find that are better, but to each their own).  The country is beautiful, it would be a shame to be cooped up in some place with other tourists.

As one of the other answerers noted though, Punta Cana doesn't really have a city around it.

Next time do yourself a favor, and just book a normal hotel in Las Terenas, Boca Chica or Cabarete.

  2. Yes, he can leave the resorts.  As anywhere just make sure you are safe.  I have left the resorts plenty of times.

  3. All Resorts in Punta Cana I've seen are walled with armed guards, so no, it is not recommended that you leave the resort without a guide. Inside the walls it is absolute paradise. The resorts contain just about everything you would want...bars, clubs, shopping, doctors, shows, etc., so folks don't feel the need to leave. Like someone else said, there are plenty of things to see in the Dominican Republic like Sonoma Island and certainly Altos de Chavon, but they are a distance away. I highly recommend the tours if you want to see the island, but while making the bus ride to these different places you will see the real DR and understand why they would rather you stay within the walled resorts. The poverty rivals the poorest areas I have seen in Mexico. I was in Punta Cana a few months ago and told that Santa Domingo was NOT somewhere to go without a good guide. La Romana seemed fine, but it does not at all compare with the type of city in Cancun. The Dom. Rep. has beautiful resorts and the larger ones will keep you entertained for weeks, but leaving the walls is something I would do 2 or 3 times a week at the most, and only with a guide.

  4. Hi !, Of course you can leave the resort, this is even a must! You need to explore this beautiful country. Go on excursion, like for example go to Isla Saona ( Natural Park with Turquoise waters and white beaches) Go to Alto de Chavon (near La Romana) go on Safari with Outback Safari to discover the in-lands and how people lives over there. In Punta Cana itself you will find enough Disco's, bars, nice Restaurants to change from the ones at your resort. Anyway folks enjoy it!

    El Pinguino

  5. All the resorts in the DR are all inclusive for a reason.

The main town has nothing you would be interested in.

Iron bars on all the windows.

Bikes are a main form of transportation.

    This is NOT Cancun.

    Go on escorted tours only

  6. yeah you can leave the resort but they say its at your own risk!! ive been to punta cana bravo and there was a shopping mall there and a open market on the beach. there isnt really any nightclubs there though but you have all the bars in the hotels

  7. Unfortunately the resorts in Punta Cana are far from any major city (45 min. drive) therefore far from any clubs where the locals go. However to answer your question yes you can leave the resort at any point, I know people that have rented vehicles and went out to explore but they were accompanied by Dominicans who live there though. Its not recommended for tourist to go out by themselves because tourist are not fully aware of all troubles you can encounter in a foreign country.
