Can you legally change your last name?

I really want to change my last name to Schwerfällig when I turn 18 because its German, and I'm of German decent but my last name isn't German. Are there restrictions on legally changing your names? Like.. does it have to be a family name or something?

  1. Yes. And good choice of name change. Just go into court and fill out the papers.

    I'm doing the same thing for my descent, I'm taking the traditional family name "Ramsey"  


  2. I'd say you'd have to talk to your local county offices and see what the process is, and tere will of course be a charge for that as well
