It depends were you download it from. If you paid for it before you downloaded it its legal. If you downloaded it with out paying its illegal. Sometimes certain sites have permission from the artist to let people download them for a certain period of time. Some sites do this illegally. If you get caught doing this it could result in a heavy fine. Good luck in doing this.

1 tip dont download loads of songs at one time thats a give away.

You can download any song free legally..... so long as you own the license.  Say you have the song on cassette.... downloading it would be legal because you've purchased a copy of the song.  Or if your CD gets damaged in some way, thus you can't rip it yourself.... again, you own the song, thus you can download it free.  Then there's also the artists who allow their stuff to be downloaded free.

There is a website ( http://freeplaymusic.com/ ) this has free music that can be downloaded LEGALLY but its not the kind of music in the top 10 or on MTV, but there is still all types of music (dance, rock, rap etc) with very high quality sound files and loads of bandwidth which allows you to download things fast!

It depends on the artist. Some allow it and most do not. For example, Nine Inch Nails released a lot of their music for free over torrents and such to promote their music and experiment with popularity of torrent downloads. Nine Inch Nails accepts downloads and promotes downloading of their music. Most artists however do not and will not allow this. You would have to pay for their music.
