How do you like my fake accent? I'm from the states and i just got Rugby06 and I kinda get how to play the game but I don't really get the rules. I mean for instance which causes a ruck or a maul or a scrum. Or for that matter what is the difference between the three. I need the FULL explanation, from ground zero so please don't go off using Rugby terms before you explain them first (I mean wouldn't you be confused if I went off talking about balks and the infield fly rule in baseball). I am very intrested in Rugby and want to be a fan so try to convince me your team is best too.

Those are the basics. I hope you like the game so much you start playing the sport, because its fantastic!

  2. Full explanation? Not so easy here without getting technical. Watch games, and ask specific questions - like your ruck, maul, scrum question.

    Visit www.usarugby.org for more info.

Scrum - It is a way to restart play after a mistake was made by a team and the opponents didn't get advantage. The 8 forwards from each team form according to set rules, and contest the ball. The non-offending team puts the ball into the scrum, and they will have the initial advantage to get the ball back.

Ruck and maul - Both form during play when there is no stoppage. The difference is that in a ruck the ball is on the ground, and in a maul the ball is held in the air by a player. In both cases there had been contact between players, and team in possession whats to get it back in play. The opposition wants to get possession, or prevent the ball from being available.

  3. hey. to tackle a person in rugby 06 just run to the person and he will automatically tackle him. then a ruck will automatically form. just repeatedly tap  right or left depending on which way Ur going and the will push the ruck then the ball will come out. then push the key depending on which way u wanna go. A scrum will only take place if u drop the ball or if u pass it forward. In the rucks Ur player has to be behind Ur last man. in other words Ur team has to be behind the ruck. the difference between a 3 man line out and a full man line out is with a 3 man line out u will have more players to pass to when u get the ball and if u want to do a driving maul. a full man line out is used to do driving mauls or to do different calls in the line out.

    hope this helps.

  4. same website as i posted in the question above yours- check it out- its in common language- no jargon and explains everything... even partying- check it out for the position lingo

a scrum is usually caused by an infraction that is unintentional... like a knock-on- (when the ball goes forward off of a body part other than the foot.)  The scrum is awarded to the team that did not commit the infraction.  the advanatage is the timing of putting the ball in the scrum and although illegal, you can actually discretely, feed it to your hooker.    but a scrum is kind of like a hockey face-off or basketball tip-off- to gain possesion again.  its something the ref calls becasue he has stopped play on the field for the infraction.  the group forms- with specific positions- see the website- and then the ball is thrown between the teams in the "tunnel."  one thing to remember is that sometimes ref's "play the advantage."  for example, if there was a knock-on, but the team that would have gained possession of the ball for the scrum ends up in a better position on the field, then the ref will not stop the play.

Ruck and maul are about the same thing except that a ruck is on the ground and a maul is when the ball is held up.  a player has choices when approaching a defender... pass, kick, go into contact and take a hit.  if you go into contact and stay up- and then you team comes and binds onto you to push the ball down the field, you are really trying to move the ball to the backside of the maul so that a scrum half can get it out to the wing that is waiting to take the ball.  its a way to slow down the pace- reset your offensive line and take control of the ball and if you have a great mauling team, make advances down the field.  most teams maul near the try line as they are about to score.

if you take the ball into contact and then end up tackled down to the ground, you must release the ball... and your teamates will ruck over you.... that means they bind onto each other to make a battering ram of people and then try to step over the ball (and hopefully you) so that it comes out the back and the scrum half can get it out to the wing.  its like a scrum, but there was no stoppage of play, and no one actually put the ball into the mass of people- the people formed around the ball on the ground.  offensively, you should put no more than 4 to 5 ina  ruck you are winning.  defensively- you probably wont win- so putting too many people into a ruck will just bunch your players and then the offensive wing players will have an overload (they will be all spread out- with lots of people waiting to receive the ball... and score).

    hope this helps!

  6. Its basically the same as American football except without any forward passing or blocking (oh and no pads).  Instead of blocking in front, rugby players push from behind and try to heel the ball back during the breakdown of play.

Rugby is continuous in that the game doesn't stop after a tackle.  The ball carrier must drop the ball when he is tackled or there is a penalty.

Actually American football is a spin-off from Canadian football (yup, we played it first) which is in turn a spin-off from rugby.

The word 'touchdown' comes from the fact that in rugby you actually have to touch the ball to the ground when you cross into the end-zone instead of just crossing the line.
