I suggest using the CRC Heavy Duty Silicone. Petroleum Jelly works well for the moment you apply it, and then slowly decays your pieces to powder. Make sure NOT to use WD-40 Silicone, that could ruin your cube.

Why not use cooking oil, you don't want all those toxic things on your hands.

CRC Heavy Duty would do. No need to lube with petroleum jelly. Your cube will accumulate a lot of dust. Just remember to wash your hands after cubing.
