water polo is an awesome sport to meet people and travel, i play and have been so many places and no so many people  i can pretty much call up a friend in at  least 3 different countries and stay with them, and i only play a state level. in terms of a career it really depends. unless you are extremely good and play for a european team such as hungry then you probably wouldnt be able to live off it. but in saying that water polo can get you scholarships into uni's around the world, its and international sport so u can travel alot and heaps of schools and clubs pay fairly decent money for half decent coaches. as for the person who said they dont know any famous water polo players they quite clearly dont play water polo
