My cousin is going to have a liver transplant. I know you can do a directed donation of blood to someone you know having a surgery, but I don't know if it has to be local. My cousin is in another state.

  1. If you donate through the American Red Cross and your cousin will be getting his blood through the ARC, it MAY be possible. If either are going to be through another (local only) blood bank, sorry, you're out of luck. Just because you give a directed donation, doesn't mean the person will be getting your blood (otherwise only people with matching blood types could give a directed donation). It is used to help defray the high costs of a blood transfusion.

Either way, I strongly recommend giving blood - so many places are operating on a chronic blood shortage, and if you have a rare type, yours will be especially useful. When you go in to donate, or call to make an appointment, they can answer any questions you have about directed donations. Good luck to both you and your cousin!

  2. you can do it but you hve to state whom it is wher ethey are and you have to pay for it i think

  3. Does he need the blood?  If he needs the blood and your the only match I'm sure they will some how pay to get your blood shipped to them. Just let his family know and they will let their insurance know and they should take care of the rest.

But if your just doing it out of the kindness of your heart then the only way you will get it up there is pay for it yourself.

Hope this helps an have a Blessed Day, slowboy.
