Can you make a window air-conditioner into a free standing unit?

Here's our dilemma: We just moved into a new house, and the windows are all the crank-angled kind (I don't know the technical term), so window AC units don't work. Instead of buying a brand new one (which we did last year, before we moved)... Can you rig a window unit to work as a free standing air conditioner?

  1. no it blows hot air out the back

  2. yeah, I'm sure you technically can, but creating cool air causes the AC to heat itself and the heat would be released into the outdoors through a window, so while you may be able to rig the unit on a shelf of some sort, it might not be worht the effort since the heat created will hinder its effectiveness in the first place.

  3. you can to an extent. but it would look really "Trailer trash" lol

if i understand the crank window, the window can be simple removed, stored and then put it in. {Side window crank or up/dwn crank} if it can't be removed, you basically have to duct the side discharge vents to outside, plus have unit on a pedistal. If you own the house, can look into the "Thru the wall" ac option

  4. Can you?  yes you CAN, but it would be a lot easier to take the crank window out (this can be done by unscrewing the crank arms and the guides they are in).

If your windows are hinged at the top then they are called awning windows.  If hinged on the side then they are casement windows.

Once you remove the window you can put your AC unit in and fill in the rest of the space with plywood.  You will also have to build an angled support to go under the AC unit against the outside wall.

  5. Nope, sorry....Your windows are called casement windows instead of double hung windows.......

  6. Take the glass out of the window and frame your ac in it with a piece of plywood.
