Can you make highlights darker?

I just got my hair done yesterday for back to school. I have dirty blond hair and i wanted some light highlights to even things out. I told her to put the highlights towards the back of my head because the front was pretty light. When all was done I figured out that the front of my hair turned platinum blond while the rest of my hair was still dirty blond! Is there any way to make your highlights darker?
