And if so, what other things do you have to do (i.e. make a character sheet for that character)?

  1. I found that you can make nice, cheap ceramic miniatures if you're the artistic sort.

  2. Is it possible to make minatures for use in the role-playing game D&D?  Yes, but it takes some skills.  The process is to carve an original out of wax or putty, make a mold from the original, and then cast the miniature in metal or plastic.  All D&D characters have a set of statistics that are normally recorded on a character sheet regardless of whether you are using a miniature, a coin, or have made your own miniature.

You can find more information about casting miniatures like this in hobbyist literature for model-building or jewelry making, as well as for pewter casting used by engineers for modeling parts.

The same process can be used for D&D Miniatures (a non-role playing miniature battle game).  You would also need to work up a stat-card for play with the game.  It's fine for casual play, but likely could not be used in a tournament style event.
