Can you name ONE THING that Gary Bettman has done to the NHL ALL BY HIMSELF?

He has accomplished many things. He has established hockey teams in places where people don't even know what hockey is. He has stopped expansion and relocation to Canada, but has considered a move to Las vegas or even Kansas City. He has masterminded Cup wins for Tampa Bay and Carolina, so they can have a parade down south. He also managed to cause a full-season lockout of the league so he can have more time to think about his masterplan to destroy the game of hockey. That's all for now, but I'm sure he'll come up with somehting else soon. Stay tuned.

No because he has done NOTHING all by himself. Good or bad, he isn't in charge to that degree. Heck even suspensions aren't done by him, maybe approved but not actually handed down.

Oh wait I thought if something. He has posed with the Captains of the Conference Winner and the Stanley Cup winner.

Yes. He's allowed each player 24hrs w/the Cup if their team wins. Allows everyone a chance w/it. Before some rookies or guys who made only minor contributions (Helm) seldom had a chance w/Lord Stanley's Cup

He was hired to assure the owners make money. He does that for the most part. Nowhere does it say he has to win a popularity contest while doing it. And he won't.

Status quo (Alan Eagleson & co.) wasn't going to do it for the league, it had to make changes. Some of those changes were not popular with a lot of fans. If you ignore the politics and look at the on-ice product, the future looks pretty good.

By himself? Nothing.  No one in a leadership position ever does anything by themselves.  Bettman is just the poster boy, the guy in the big chair at the end of the table if you will.  He doesnt make decisions on his own.  Bettman has done some good things for the league, but I don't think the NHL is in the place any of us would like to see it right now.

Worst things Bettman can be blamed for:

1) Expansion. Do we really need Atlanta, Columbus, Florida and Nashville in the league? Anaheim and Minniesota were good choices.

2) The Strike. In no way was this Bettmans fault solely, but he gets the anchor hung around his next for it alot.

3) Tv Package. Once again I am sure it is Betty sitting in a room by himself with all the tv execs, but something needs to be done to bring exposure to the game.  Those of us who live in local markets generally have a FSN that plays the hometeam games, but I would love to see more out of market games.  VS has done a good job, far better than anyone anticipated imo, but it doesn't help the league as widely as an ESPN deal or soemthing similar would.  Before the NHL all I ever watched on OLN was the Tour de France lol.

All by himself? Not much of anything. But He has really pissed off many hockey fans in general. So for any positive step(the few) he takes two big ones back.

1. He brought hockey to places who until he came along thought Ice was only for cooling drinks.

2. He found jobs for Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. Both became owners under his watch.

3. He brought us the shoot out.

4. He gave us the salary cap. That way the rich can get truly richer and the poor can continue to get truly poorer only more slowly.

I know that isn't just one thing but he has given us so much for which we can be truly thankful.

Well, if he is responsible for all that is wrong with the league, he has to be equally responsible for all that is good with the league.

Opinions will differ what is wrong and what is good with the NHL.   The arguments will be are rabid as those who debate religion and politics.
