  1. Doormouse (45,000 left which is a massive decline),

Scottish Wildcat (possibly just a few hundred left), Barn Owl

(few thousand left), Cuckoo (a brief summer visitor from Africa but in radical decline as are those other celebrated summer visiting birds Swifts, Swallows and House Martins),

Thrush (numbers declined by three quarters since the 1950s),

Common House Sparrow (massive decline - completely disappeared from many areas). With birds its hard to give figures unless there are so few left they can be literally counted, Skylarks, Bitterns (there may only be 20 breeding pairs left in the U.K.) The sad truth is that modern farming with

mega fields, pesticides and disappearing hedgerows and ponds have not served wildlife well in Britain. Migrating birds

are often shot on their way over Europe from Africa to Britain.

Its not quite all bad news. Raptors such as Buzzards, Red Kites and Peregrine Falcons seem to be doing well and have recovered well from virtual extinction in the 1960s. Members of the Crow Family like the Crow,Jay and Magpie

have colonised suburban parks and gardens with great success. Deer Numbers have increased massively almost everywhere. One of the greatest declines of all is in people, the sort of people who care for and nurture the natural landscape and its unique wildlife. I fear that out of a population of 60 million in the U.K., there are just a few thousand left.
