Can you name one book you gave up on and one book you couldn't put down, please?

  1. Gave up on: Watchmen, but I would like to try it again.  I struggle with graphic novels.

    Couldn't put down: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  Read it straight thru in 9 hrs.

  3. Lord of the Rings I gave up on    -   I'm not into Goblins, fairies, pixies etc, but I can never put down a travel book. One good book I recently read from cover to cover was Cinnamon City  by Miranda Innes. She told of her adventures in purchasing, renovating a riadh in Morocco, but elaborated so well on the culture of Morocco, the mystycism, and subtle comparson to her homes in Andalucia and Brighton.

  6. I couldn't put down any of the Harry Potter books but gave up on The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown after one paragraph - it's the worst written book ever

  7. Walked away from Canadian telephone book printed in French.

    Was glued to Non-Fiction titled: The Longest Cave.

  8. The Stand by Stephen King. Though it was complete drivel and is about 1500 pages long so could not be bothered after about 100 pages.

    Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks. One of the best books ever although a bit depressing.

    HP, Twilight novels (even the hideous last book), all Dan Brown books, the Other Boleyn Girl, I Am America (and So Can You).

    but admittedly i gave up on "The fellowship of the ring"

    i shouldn't have watched the film first!

    I had to put down Heart Shaped Box, I think I read a quarter, skimmed a quarter then got fed up & read the last chapter

    I couldn't put down 'Fingersmith' by Sarah Waters - amazing book!!

  19. I started to read a book about the Stuarts. I think I got to page 10. I can't remember the title. Now why doesn't that surprise me?

    Wild Swans - Jung Chang. Fascinating history of China from the last days of the Empire through Mao's Cultural Revolution. Fascinating.

    Gave up on: A Question Of Blood - Ian Rankin (although i was young, trying again soon)

  22. I gave up on "Eragon" because it was boring and I couldn't get into it.

    I couldn't put down "Crime and Punishment" because it was really interesting and fascinating.  

  23. Couldnt put down: The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart.... Just brilliant, start to finish.

    Gave up on:  The Naked Lunch by William Burroughs, I just couldn't get in to the groovy / jive kinda prose, although its meant to be a new age classic... ah well, maybe another day i'll try again.

    Can barely pick up any book on improving management skills zzzzz

  27. I gave up on the "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" (mind you I was only 16 at the time)

    Found the Jean Auel books - first was Clan of the Cave Bear" I think, about Neanderthal and stone-age man fascinating.

  28. It's funny, because the two that sprang to mind are from the same author, Coetzee.

    The first one is Disgrace, I loved that book.  It made me angry and I wanted to throw it across the room at the end when the characters made tragic mistakes (according to me), but it was amazing and I couldn't put it down.

    The other one is Youth, I have picked it up several times and have yet to get past the first 5 chapters.  One day I will finish it, maybe.

    EDIT: it sucks that everyone seems to have been stumped on FotR...but then again i saw the movies first hehe

    tried reading Lord of the Rings.

    i dunno what i found so difficult in that (lord of the rings)
