Henrietta Leavitt was the first to discover the spectral types of stars and classify them.  Margaret Gellar made one of the first maps of the nearby universe (Harvard Stick Man).  Vera Rubin discovered dark matter.  Sakio (sp?) Tsuruta discovered neutron stars.  I'm a bit biased to astronomers.
