  1. As Wibber mentioned, there are many and each one has some specific use relative to age cohort, subject matter, and desired outcomes.

One of the more contemporary instructional methods that is frequently discussed -and researced- is "differentiated instruction" (there are more than enough sources on the web for you to garner info on this).

Without writing a treatise on the topic, differentiated instruction is an attempt by the educational community to come to terms with the fact that i) all learners are different, ii) beyond learning styles, there is a learning continuum, iii) laws such as NCLB have compelled public education to provide for "least restrictive environments" for students -especially those identified as "special needs" students, iv) learning theorists as well as brain-researchers are emphatic about the need for instruction to be much more than lecture, v) the instructional methods of the past few hundred years are now outdated and have little relevance in the classroom.

I hope this is helpful.  Please know that if you decide to focus on "differentiated instruction" you will not encounter any problems in getting research-based information and dat from the Internet, nor from teachers if you decide to conduct some interviews.

    Good luck, and have fun!

  2. There are tons of them:

    Cooperative Learning

    Direct Instruction

    Indirect Instruction

    Concept Attainment

    Discovery Learning

I taught all of these in graduate school.  They are interesting and effective in taught well.  Type the name of a strategy into your browser's search box, and you will find many, many links to help you understand these.

    Good Luck!

These are used for different purposes in the classroom.
