  1. Carpet used to be measured "quoted" in sq. yards.

Government changed that and requires sq. feet. However, sq. yards are still the method for calculation.  A room 10'X10' is 100 sq. feet, BUT, carpet may be 12" width and the job requires 12"X10'.  That's 13.33 sq. yds, but will be quoted as 120 sq. feet.

    Confusing for many people.

Tiles will be quoted and charged by the full box, usually more than the required sq. feet of an area.

Sq. Inches or sq feet.  1 tile may be 12"X12".

    Housing lots.

Measured in sq. feet and perimeter.

    Construction slabs.Sq. feet and perimeter.

    (Material, concrete in cubic yards)

    Plywood, paneling, lumber sheets, sheetrock.

Usually 4'X8', sq. feet, and perimeter.

Thickness in inches/fractions of an inch.

    Roofing.

    Sq. feet and perimeter.

Molding and trims, such as gutters use lineal feet.  Perimeter.
