  1. German Potato Salad

    Gulaschsoup

    Gluhwein

    Hazelnut Omelet

  2. chocolate

  3. German potato salad and brautwurst

  4. this is a family recipe that my german grandma used to make.....I still like it too

    1 large onion

    left over roast chicken

    cream

cut up the onion and cook it in a pan with a little butter until it turns clear, add cut up roast chicken meat, add a couple of dollops of cream......salt and pepper it to taste

cook off some of the cream

    serve immediately

    yummy  :  )

  5. Frikadellen...  they taste absolutely amazing!!

  6. sauerkraut  with brockwurst sausages,

    hogs balls with tomato sauce

    apple strundel with cream

  7. My perfect winter Berliner evening meal.

    Starter:

Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancake). See the recipe link below. Serve this with an apple sauce and a nice German white wine. (That's tautologous, the only nice German wines are the white ones).

    Main course:

Kohlrouladen. It's a popular dish that is difficult to come by in summer. When you eat it you'll see why. Some people give them different names but it's basically the same. Make one per person.

This is basically a pork and/or beef wellington wrapped up in cabbage leaves and boiled or baked (as you prefer).

If you bake it then baste the rouladen in gravy and make sure that it coats the (roasting) potatoes which you have put around the things in their baking tray. Recipe in the link below.

If you boil it then serve with boiled potatoes and another root veg. I like mashed celeriac. Pour gravy over the lot.

My preference is to have the gravy tending towards the thick instead of runny so that everything is well coated and not sitting in a watery bowl.

Have a reasonably heavy beer with it. The lighter lagers can be a bit wimpy when confronted with this meal. Definitely don't have a gassy drink and don't insult it by drinking any lager except the German ones.

Have lots of "Bahlzen" chocolates lying around and it is acceptable to serve a miniature "schnapps" between courses.

  8. If ur in the UK.  Shop in Lidl or Aldi... u'll get loads of ideas there... the Bratwursts are great.

    Bratwurst

    Brokwurst

    Potato Salad

    Mayonnaise

    Chip with curry sauce

Lots of meat & less veg

    Posh puddings.

Massive Tuna salad in a large bowl with plenty of sourkrout on the bottom, eggs & onions & lettuce n beetroot.

    Peanut Butter crisps

  10. You HAVE to have pork chops with caraway seeds and lots of fried onions.  Serve them with bread dumplings over which you spoon the pan drippings from the chops.  On the side you'll need Sauerkraut (add caraway seeds  - they take away the "gas" and add a wonderful flavour).  YUP - goes great with a cold beer.

Other suggestions:  Bavarian Wurstsalat, Blood Sausage with fried potatoes (not exactly cholesterol-friendly), Bierocks

(beef and cabbage stuffed buns), Rinderrouladen

(braised stuffed beef rolls), Wiener Schnitzel

(breaded pork cutlets), sausages with Himmel und Erde

(apples and potatoes).  If you do the Wurstsalat, I suggest Kaiser rolls or Pumpernickel bread to go with it!

Dessert - Black Forest Cake (if you're serving only adults, use real rum).

    RECIPE:

    Bread Dumplings ( Semmelknödel )

    Ingredients:

    4 stale rolls

    50g (2oz) fat

    50g (2 oz) onions

    1 tsp parsley

    1 tsp celery-leafs

    4 tbs flour

    1 tsp salt

    app. 1/4 l (8 fluid oz) milk

    2 eggs

    salted water

    Prepare:

Cut rolls into small cubes (1cm). Fry chopped onions in fat until golden brown, add finely chopped parsley and celery leafs, fry for 1 min. Mix rolls, flour, onions, add milk, eggs, salt. Mix very well. Shape 8 dumplings, allow them to rest for ½  hour. Drop them into boiling salted water, simmer 10 min.

INFO: In different regions they mix bacon, sausage, smoked meat or liver into the dumplings . Then these dumplings are called "Tyrolean Dumplings", "Liver Dumplings" etc. Bread Dumplings are a main dish eaten with any vegetable or sauce. They also are eaten as side dish with meat or are served to beef broth.

Ideal served with pork chops - drizzle liberally with browned pork chop “juices”.

P.S. - May I come to dinner, too??  That sounds like MY kind of evening!!

  11. Wiener Schnitzel!

    2 lbs. veal

    4 eggs

    cooking oil

    flour

    bread crumbs

    salt & pepper

Cut the veal into at least finger thick fillets, so they can be pounded well. After pounding flat dip both sides into the flour. Blend the eggs with one tbsp. oil and some salt and pepper and pull the fillets through this mixture. Finally, lay the fillets into the bread-crumbs, which should cover all meat, but do not press the bread-crumbs on to the meat with your fingers or they will become hard when frying. Fry in a small amount of oil on medium heat for about 5 minutes on each side. The fillets should become a golden brown.

  12. Hasenpfeffer

  13. For anyone that really likes food it's going to be one h**l of a boring evening. Germany is devoid of culinary greats - as well as humour. If you like your meat mechanically recovered then by all means have bockwurst/bratwurst/frikadellen. Carolx - A lot of what oyu mention is not actually german - just because it was bought in lidl/aldi does not make it a german invention!!

  14. Bratwurst, sauerkraut
