Our son (adopted) has been diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, can we obtain social security benefits for him?

  1. Yes, If your the child's legal guardian and they are disabled, contact your department of walfare about amking a disabilty claim for your child.

Provided that the FAS affects the childs ability to learn or function in a normal fashion and you are the child's legal parent then the child would qualify - there are lawyers who specialize in SSI law and if a claim is declined, I would contact a lawyer who specializes in this area - they do not get paid unless you win the claim and attain the child's SSI.  Since FAS will lead to extra medical bills, etc. the child will usually also qualify for medicaid to supplement any other insurance which they have.
