Can you operate a 240v dc relay from a 240v ac supply

Tried but relay just chatters and willnot hold i WHY?

Most relays require very little voltage to open and close the contacts. First read the make and part number of relay and I can tell you what it can or cannot do. With the chatter and vibration you hear sounds like the coil windings that open or close contacts has failed.
