Can you overcharge Xbox 360 batteries?

I have the play and charge kit for my xbox and the rechargeable battery pack is flat but when the charge lead is plugged in the light shows red then over time charges. When removed the battery status in the top left corner of the screen goes from full to none in 2 seconds then displays "please reconnect controller" as the battery is flat. BUT this only happens for the rechargeable pack, not the regular battery holder which works fine with 2 rechargeable AA batteries.

Have I overcharged the battery pack or is it broken which means I should just buy another, cheap from eBay? Thanks.

It sounds like you need a new rechargeable battery pack. How long have you had the controller?
