Question:

Can you paint flagstone?

I have 10 pieces of flag stone that I purchased from Home Depot in an orange terra cotta color. Originally I was going to do my backyard in reds and oranges, but now I changed my mind to blues and greens. I want to paint my flagstone instead of buying new ones, since there shape is perfect. The color would be a beautful aqua color and maybe paint a palmtree on a few of them. Is this something that can be done, or should I just throw the flagstone away and buy the gray ones?

  1. Flagstone doesn't usually come in one solid color, especially terra cotta.  So, it's possible you have a faux flagstone.  In that case, I wouldn't throw it away, but, would attempt some sort of painting that you are interested in doing.  Try it on just one first and see if it works.  If it were real flagstone, I wouldn't advise that you change it.

  2. I imagine you don't actually have natural stone or "flagstone", but precast concrete pieces.

If so, you can paint these quite easily.

  3. THere are stains for rock and cement. But since you are starting with orange you may not get the result you are looking for.

Painting will chip and crack. I wouldn't suggest it.
