Can you paper train an English Bulldog?

I'd like to get an English Bulldog but have health problems that don't allow me to go outside much in the winter. Is it possible to paper train an English Bulldog? Or would it be too hard on him since he wouldn't exactly be a 'petite' dog?

  1. OOOOOoooooh! English Bulldog question! My favorite! I have 2...an almost 4 year old female and an almost 1 year old male (their bdays are days apart!)

While I would never paper train any dog; you could opt for litter training your dog. They make dog litter and litter boxes. You would need to clean everytime he messes in it. If the box is too dirty he might decide to mess next to it instead of it. I also would put this box on a non carpeted surface. Bulldog do not need to be walked everyday but they do need playtime. We live in New Hampshire where the winters are harsh and the summers are H-O-T!! Therefore, they do not get walked in the winter (toooo cold and the road salt no good for their paws!) or the summer (too hot for their squished faces to breathe right)

  2. well imo english bulldogs would need a daily walk at least. would you consider a dog walker instead? that would be easier. you can pay local kids to do it even.

then maybe you can teach him to go in just one spot on your lawn, that way you could let a long rope outside your back door. bulldogs really can't exercise much in the warmer weather so i mean i guess you'd have to think of weight issues too. from what i read, bulldogs aren't the best at training.

  3. I think you might consider a litter box method.

  4. Hrm.  Have you considered a doggie door, with an enclosed area just outside?  If your living conditions don't permit that, you could hire a professional dogwalker (altho it's liable to run you a pretty penny to have someone coming in morning, noon, and night!).  You could train with puppy training pads (they're treated with pheromones that inspire elimination) and I've also heard of folks having great success with a doggie litter pan (there's special pelletized paper litter that goes into a large, heavy pan.).  Or, have you considered a different breed?  French bulldogs are little guys with big bulldog personalities.

    Don't despair, and best luck!
