Can you pay to travel round the world on a merchant vessel, like Michael Palin in round the world in 80 days?

ie, a century ago you could work your passage as a stow-away, but is there a medium between a cruise and a stow away?

  2. some merchant vessels do take paying passengers it is not as luxurious as a cruise liner but is much more fun and the service food etc is fantastic

  4. you couldn't travel 'around the world' as most vessels traval a certain route and stick to it, but yes you can travel on some cargo ships as a paying passenger, for example i had a friend who travelled from london to asia on a car carrier,
