Can you perform hardcore weighlifting and still be able to be great at distance running?

I want to be a professional distance runner when I grow up. I hope some day to hold the record in the mile and many other distances. However, I want a body that is muscular, but not skinny. Many professionals have muscular, skinny bodies with no fat. I want a great physique, one that doesn't have the structure of many distance runners today. I have a weight workout program that allows me to perform high weight , but low reps. I know this is the way to get big. Distance runners have to lift low weight, but high reps. I want other people to know that I am strong, not that I am skinny. So my question is, can I perform my weight program and still be able to be on the road to breaking the mile record. This is one of my lifelong goals and I know with your advice I can achieve that. Thank you for your time and advice.

  1. Sorry, but there's no way you can be a hardcore weightlifter and a professional distance runner. The competition is so fierce on the professional circuit that you would not be able to afford carrying excess weight. However, you seem like the type of well-rounded athlete that could excel at decathlon (ten events comprising runs, throws, and jumps). Check it out.

  2. The problem with having big muscles is you have to carry them with the rest of your body when you run.

Distance runners need muscles, but as you know, they don't want excess muscles.

If you are too big  you can not do as well in distance races.

You can see the difference between sprinters bodies and distance runner's bodies.

  3. work more on your core, helps with stride and posture

lift during off season, or pre season

  4. If you are running events like the 3200 and you probably should lay off the weight lifting a little. However in the 800 most of the best guys I've seen are pretty muscular, and the mile I've seen both muscular and skinny guys. Maybe if you want to be a hardcore weightlifter you should run the mile but also try to have the 800 as a main event for you.
