Question:

Can you perform?

Once in college, can you still perform in the plays they show, even if you're not studying theater? I really want to act in plays, and I've got 4 years to go, but my parents want me to be a doctor, and after that, act if I want, or paint if I want, or whatever, as long as I'm a successful doctor. I don't mind being a doctor, but the thing is, it'll take me until I'm at least 25 (most likely until I'm 30) to finish with my studies. Then, I won't have any time to act left. I mean, I'll already 30 years old by that time. So, do you know how I could do this? Can I still act in the plays performed in college, even if I'm not studying theater?

  1. i think if that's what you want to do go 4 it. but still stay in school for just in case.

  2. You should prusue what you want in life.  But if you agree with your parents idea of having a successful career first, there's no reason you won't be able to act after you've finished your course work.  30, 40, 50 and even 80 year old women are needed in plays!

In the meantime, take an outside acting course if you think your schedule will allow it.  If your school doesn't let anyone outside of a theatre major audition for shows, then audition for a show at your local theatre or rec center.  There's no reason you can't be successful and do what you enjoy!

  3. Depends on the college. Some do allow non theatre students to participate, some do not, but the real issue that if you study to be a doctor you will have little time for plays in school or when you start to practice medicine. As an undergrad in premed, you can probably find time to be in plays if they will let you.

  4. first of all don't do what your parent's say, and want you to be, because then if you do become a doctor, and you hate it, work will be h**l. So become an actor! I am an actress and a freshman! BECOME SOMETHING YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO BE! TRUST ME. My mum went to school to become a teacher, and she dropped out because she realized she wanted to sing. Then she became a singer. Then on the other hand, my dad went to college like 8 times...

    Good Luck!
