Question:

Can you play PlayStation 2 games on a PlayStation 3 console?

I am going over to my friends house this afternoon, he has a PS3 and I have a PS2. I thought: since PS1 games work on PS2 consoles, shouldn't PS2 games work on PS3 consoles? So i went on Google and looked it up, some sites say "yes" but others say "no". Can you help me out? thanks :)

Take yourself over to the official PS3 backward compatability list and look up your game.

It depends on the model of ps3. The launch 60 gb PS3 has PS1/PS2 compatibility. This is the one I have. Now, only the 80 gb PS3 has backwards compatibility. If your friend has the launch 20 gb, the 40 gb, or the new 60 gb, it will not have backwards compatibility.

some yes...some no.....just like XBOX 360. depends on the game. tell your friend to get rid of the PS3 anyways and downgrade to a PS2 or get a XBOX360. Assuming he has and beaten Metal Gear Solid 4. After that its worthless!

Anyway to answer your question no and yes. The new ones don't and the old ones do. I have one of the new 80GB PS3's and I don't have any PS2 games to play on it anyway so it doesn't really bother me that much and I only ever use two USB ports at the most so its perfect for me.

From what i have heard, some games will not run on the PS3 that are ps2 games.

You can play some. Go to PS3 Site and it should tell you the compatible games. You have to do lots of updates though.

The PS3 is backwards compatible with MOST games, but not ALL games. You can go to this website and check if the games you have will be compatible.
