Can you play dvds on a hifi?

can you play dvds on a hifi or only cds (e.g. you load an music album on a dvd).

If you only have a CD player connected to your hi-fi system, you can only play CDs.

If you connect up your DVD player, you can play DVDs.

If your hi-fi system includes a DVD player, you can play DVDs and CDs; if it only has a CD player, you can only play CDs.

CDs can be played in DVD players (backwards compatibility), but DVDs can not be played in CD players (forwards compatibility).

There is an exception to this rule: way back in the late 1990s, when DVD was new-fangled, there was a company that produced double-sided discs that were DVD format on one side and CD format on the other.
