Can you play older Nintendo games using the Wii system?

Just wondering. I was told I could, but am not sure if I should buy a game to try.....

Technically you can. With Gamecube games, you can just put them in the disk slot, and can play them with a Gamecube controller (there is a slot for the controllers and memory cards). With older games, you can buy them off of the Wii Shop Channel, but for a price, which is usually not above 1000 points (10 dollars). Also, on most of the games, you can use a Gamecube controller on them. Others, though, you have to buy the Classic Controller, which is an extra $20.

You can play Gamecube games by popping in the disk, and plugging in a Gamecube Controller and a Gamecube Memory Card.

You can also download (for a $5-12 fee, depending on the game) through the Wii Shop Channel a selection of games from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, TurboGrafix16, and NeoGeo.

You can play a limited amount of older Nintendo games, but you have to buy them on the wii system. Though, you can play Gamecube games on it if you already have some.

Not just from older Nintendo systems but others just check the wii shopping channels virtual console, there you will see what classic games can be downloaded, you will need wii points to purchase them, which can be bought with either a credit card or from purchasing a wii points card.

Through the Wii Shop Channel, you can buy Wii versions of old NES, SNES, N64, Genasis, Turbo-Graphix, and Neo Geo games, in addition to new specific for Wii games from Wii Ware ranging from 500 - 1500 Wii points ($5 - $15).

Once you purchase and download, each game becomes a new channel accessible in the Wii Menu.  Depending on the game, they can be played by holding the remote sideways like an old NES controller, or you need the virtual console controller (looks like a SNES controller with more buttons), or you can use GameCube controllers plugged into the top.  Each game varies which controllers you can and cannot use, and tells you before you buy them.
