Can you please explain this quote from A Walk to Remember?

The only thing that truely matters is who your friends are and who you keep around you. That only true friends will stand by you no matter what, others will leave at the first sign of trouble, or they are only your friends when they want something.

lets just say you win the lotto tonight,by next week you will have lots of friends but when you spend all the money they will slowly disappear except for maybe a few and they will be the ones   by your side

I guess this kind of means YOUR FRIENDS in general. Like if you're going to get yourself into trouble.. and all your friends are with you when you make the problem.. like if you do that problem that night.. in the morning... it all comes down to who's STILL by your side to face the damage. Those are the people who you should really keep as your good friends.
