I haven't understood so much reading on TFL website.. I've an Oyster card, and I top-up it with, let's say, 10 £. I have to travel in zones 1 and 2 everyday without limit. I pay the first travel, then the second, and so on until I reach the maximum rate (which is the rate for a travel card) and after that I don't pay anymore. Is it right?

  1. You can purchase a Oyster Card for monthly use for (£50.00), which means you can travel in certain zones unlimited for the month. When the month is finished then you have to top up again or there won't be any funds left on the card and you can't travel at all. e.g. starting from May 28 to June 28.

Weekly purchase means you buy the pass for 7 days of unlimited travel for certain zones and after the 7 days are up you have put more money on the card as it has expired or you can't travel.

You can also credit the card with 1 pound and use it once in a specified zone. If you put 2 pounds then you could travel twice. eg. go to work and return home if just travelling in one zone or not changing bus.

If you top up 10£ you can travel in zone 1 and 2, but, when funds run out on the card you have to top up again. You can check how much credit you have on the card where you purchased it or another store that sells oyster cards. You can also check on the bus you travel or ask driver to tell you how much credit you have left on card.

  2. Your understanding is almost correct - with a Pay-As-You-Go Oystercard the maximum amount that you will pay is 50p less than the price of the one-day Travelcard.
