  1.    You're probably Zlata's age, so try to imagine what it would be like to have to live through a civil war.  Zlata couldn't play the piano or enjoy anything that a girl your age should.  The civil war in Sarajevo took place in 1991, so it wasn't that long ago.  Her story is very similar to that of Anne Frank.  Maybe you can relate the two and point out that not that long ago history repeated itself.  So many people read Anne Frank's diary in the decades that followed WWII and were outraged by what had occured, but almost the SAME situation happened in 1991 to Zlata!  Anne watched her father go from a well-to-do businessman to a desperate man in hiding.  Zlata watched her father lose parts of his fingers to frostbite as he cut wood to stay warm.  History repeats itself.  If we don't learn from it AND make a strong effort to change the mistakes, we're doomed to repeat it.

               Just become Zlata...and write.

  2. I think what your teacher wants is for you to get into the author's head, and try to understand for yourself what it is she is trying to tell the world through her diary. She must be trying to tell the world something and you are to explain what it is she is trying to say. I have never read this book, so I have no idea what it is about, but think of yourself as Zlata, and see the world through her eyes, and tell your teacher what it is you, as Zlata, want the world to know. Also, explain the importance of  what ever it is that Zlata is trying to say, and find specific parts in the book that refer to these ideas. Hope this helped you some.

  3. as you read the story pretend to be the girl the story's about.  then explain the main lessons and every thing else on the list.  :)

  4. OK.  First you have to think of the main lessons or ideas that are in the book, and what events or ideas in the diary show this to people.

Rather than writing it ABOUT Zlata and her diary, you will write this as if you ARE Zlata.  For example:

"I wrote my diary so that..."

Refer to what is in the diary as you are writing this.

E.g.:When I told you about_____________, I wanted you to (know, understand, feel...)

    Hope that helps:-)

  5. Well, I'm not familiar with the book but I hope this helps.

Put yourself in the shoes of Zlata, who I believe is the main character of the story. What are the important lessons or ideas in your (Zlata's) world? How do you think these become significant in our world today? Do you think the things Zlata encounters in his/her world can be applied in our world? If so, describe how they can be applied. List down concrete steps on how to apply each idea.

That's how you could go about your essay..^_^
