  1. The pythagorean theorem states that a^2 + b^2 = c^2. Pretend that you have a triangle with 3 sides. One leg is a. One leg is b. The angle between a and b is the right angle or 90 degrees or pi/2 radians. Across the right angle is the hypotenuse, which is side c. Now, suppose there is one square attached to each side. In mathematical theory, you can actually take the square attached to side a, which is a^2, add to the square attached to side b, which b^2, to obtain c^2. Therefore, pythagorean theorem works as I described.

*hint* *hint* *wink* *wink* The pythagorean theorem is so important that it is also used in trigonometry: the law of cosines!

*Another neat trick* If you rewrite the pythagorean theorem, then you come up with the distance formula, the basis of limits, which is the bridge to derivatives! See how math is all connected?

If you want to learn about the history side of the theorem, then visit wikipedia. You may find that the theorem is named after Pythagoras, the Greek Mathematician, but not necessarily found by him.
