  2. You can look it up easily. Is this an assignment related to classification, or about plants?

Binomial nomenclature is the genus and species of an organism. Don't forget that the species name is not capitalized.

Oaks are Quercus. There is pin oak (palustris), red (rubra), white (alba), etc.

Maples are Acer (yes, like the computers). Japanese maples are palmatums, silver is saccarrinum (do not confuse with sugar maple which is saccarum), red is rubra.

Ironwood and chestnut are the same tree with different common names  (the primary reason we need binomial nomenclature) and the genus is Aesculus.

Spruce is Picea. Spruces come in shrub form and upright/conical. That's why the species name is just as important as the Genus. Picea tells you it's a spruce, but the species name, like pungens, tells you it is the large tree, Green Spruce. But Picea pungens glauca is the large Blue Spruce, and Picea glauca 'Conica' is a short shrub called Alberta spruce.

Of course, you can pick herbs, perennials, annuals, bulbs (tulips, daffodils, etc), houseplants, water plants-the possibilities are endless. I can't believe the teacher only asked for 2 plants!

Just hit in the common name and the words 'botanical name' or 'botanical nomenclature' in a search engine. Good luck!

  3. This is very simple, just think of any plant and look it up on wikipedia.  My favorite sounding one is Toxicodendron diversilobum (poison oak).  Good luck.
