The regional representative of Church World Service hired me to write 3 HR manuals for their organization. It is a short-term job (3 months) I went to the office today for a second interview. It is in the Church of Christ in Thailand Building near Ratchatavee BTS.

The interviewer claimed the job is mine--it is up to me if I want to take the job. He introduced me to the employees in the organization. A Manager asked where do I want to sit. She also asked for my phone number to contact me.

The interviewer wants me to start on Sep 1 (Monday)

However, they don't have a contact me yet. We talked about salary earlier. He said, he still waits for the main office to approve my salary.

P.S.

I know the interviewer online because we went to the same college n the USA. He is my father age. However, I have more education than him. The whole time we met for the job interview he hardly talks about the job. He looks at my resume and said the job is yours!

Does this sound right? Any advice. Please help me.

  1. I take it you were hired by an American.  My guess would be they knew based on your command of the English language and ability to speak Thai and English that they would hire you once you came in.  That is not atypical for an employer from the states to do.  Once you came in, and they saw you were presentable (you are not a troll and so on), they knew the job was yours.

Many American employers have staff that are not under contract (known as 'employment at will'), meaning the employee is free to leave at any time, and the employer can dismiss an employee for whatever reason.

I have no idea about how the Church conducts its business, but I would imagine salary approval for you would not cause a delay in giving you a contract.

Absolutely nothing sinister about it.  Good luck!

EDIT: Do not be surprised if you are offered a full time job at the end of 90 days.  Whether you want it or not would be entirely up to you.  Many US companies have a 90 probationary or trial period.  When they do business abroad, they have the same mentality when they conduct business abroad.

Do I know this to be the case for you?  I do not know with absolute certainty, but I am guessing this would be the case.

  2. Your question is very confusing.  Not sure what your looking for.  What does the fact the the interviewer is your father age have to do with anything or you have more education?  I mention this before you need to start making some of your own decisions.  No one here was at your interview.

Maybe no contract yet because it is a weekend back in the States and these people are just coming to work starting a new weekl.

  3. With all due respect's to you. Please stay at home. the Thai people have the best religion, they just don't go on and on about it the way christians do

Here's there website.  They probably hired you because of your resume (experience) and they think you'll do a good job. Also because of your resume they are probably paying more than they had originally budgeted so they have to get approval for the higher amount.

I was told over three weeks ago that I was hired for a job (a place I've worked before so I know the people).  Now for three weeks I haven't heard from the personnel office.  Just wait it will all fall into place.  You can apply for other jobs in the mean time just in case.
