Here is a brief scenario: You are in a restaurant with an individual you are supporting; suddenly the child begins to yell loudly and bang on the table. What would you do?

  1. In order to resolve this situation you need to take into account quite a few things. However, because of the vagueness of your scenario it is difficult to pinpoint how to deal with the situation.  For one, if the child is 2, banging on the table and yelling may be just the age. IF they child is considerably older but is severely impaired perhaps they are just saying they are hungry or are bored? There could also be instances of overstimulation in a busy restaurant that could cause the child to become stressed out.

In any case, it is impossible to tell you exactly what to do in that situation because there is not enough information such as age, and the needs of the child.  You just have to analyze the situation and take care of it the best way you see fit.

  2. the term is REDIRECT-into an appropriate activity-if the child is unreasonably out of control you may need to move him someplace out of the way

    can you determine why--

prompt the child to communicate what he wants

if it is safe--ignore the child until he calms down-and than reward with attention/toy/food

  3. I am a special ed teacher. I would immediately attend to the childs needs by supplying her with a soft toy . If this didnt work I would remove child to restroom til I could distract the attention onto something else. I would explain to my guest what the issue was with the child ......... or entice w/food or some other interest..... the key is to break the pattern and disract.
