Question:

Can you please help me fix my TV?

So when I turn my TV on there is a white line directly across the middle ( a horizontal line that is ) and if you tap the TV it goes back to normal and gives the regular picture.

I don't want to just "tap" my tv all the time, so I took the back off. Inside it is this circuit board, that has all of the cords, and wiring on it. If i press the board down just a little bit, the picture comes back to the TV, but when its relieved of the pressure the horizonal line comes back unless its shook enough.

I checked the chords, and none of them seem to be the problem. Does anyone have any ideas about what this could be?

  1. The board has a crack or a loose solder joint. A technician could possibly find it but it might cost more than the TV is worth.

And, yes, there's some high voltages in there... some of them deadly. TVs (the CRT type anyway) are among the most dangerous appliances to work on. It's not the kind of thing an untrained person should be working on... ok?

My advice? Consider retiring that old set... digital TV is coming next February 19th anyway. And that line of bull from the cable company  that your old set will still work... well, that is if you want to watch fewer and fewer channels as they quietly reallocate analog to digital.

  2. Stay out of the back of the TV !!!! Some of the transformers, capacitors, resistors etc. can have tens of thousands of volts in them, enough to more than kill you a few times. Not only that, but they could fry your body beyond recognition. Seriously, it's dangerous in there. Call a repair person.

  3. Whew weee-- be careful. Some of those components can hold a charge even after you unplug it.

The circuit board could have a crack in it. Or a solder joint on the board could have a crack.
