The sentence:

I don't pay anyone huge wages so inviting my team to a dinner it is kind of Alexander' s and my way of saying thank you. Some designers don't seem to see the need for it. One of them is so HIP they are not inviting a single one of their students to the Christman Party.

What does HIP mean?

Could you please help me in understanding the sentence? thanks

  1. It is US slang for cool

  2. high in pretentiousness

  3. It's not English, even if they are using English words. Sounds US American to me.

  4. Some of it isn't phrased very well at all.

    For example:

    "Alexander's and my" is incorrect.

But anyway, the meaning was your question so I won't bother correcting the grammar.

It basically means as they don't pay the staff much, they make up for it by inviting them to dinner, whereby the dinner is like a bonus to make up for the short-comings of the wage.

Some designers feel that the wage is adequate payment and so don't bother to reward the staff at all.

There are lots of words for "hip"; trendy, cool, with it, etc.

The writer means that this individual thinks that he is better than his students and would feel embarrassed by their presence.

As he is so cool he 'wouldn't be seen dead' associating with students and so doesn't invite any.

I hope that clarifies it for you :)

  5. Hip means 'extremely cutting-edge modern and fashionable'. Or trying to be .....

I think the writer is being a bit nasty to the Hip person, and suggesting that they do not value the efforts of the team who were not paid very much to help out.

  6. Erm, hip is a kind of dated (by 20 years or so) word.

Hip means - cool, stylish, awesome etc.

It means that you are trendy, following the latest fashion etc.

There was a song "it's hip to be square", that song is a popular song involving the word hip.
