x^2 - 10x + 2 = 0

Solve using x = (-b ± sqrt (b^2 - 4ac))/2a

a = 1, b = -10, c = 2

x = (10 ± sqrt (100 - 8))/2 = (10 ± sqrt(92))/2 = 5 ± sqrt(23)

The Quadratic Formula is:

χ = -b ± √b^2 - 4ac / 2a

With your equation move everything to the left side and simlify.

x2 -3x-7x+2 =0

x2 - 10x +2 =0

Therefore: a=1, b= -10, c=2

Substitute these numbers into the equation:

χ = - -10 ± √-10^2 - 4x1x2 / 2x1

χ = 10 ± √-100 - 8 / 1

χ = 10± √-108 / 1

χ = 10 ± √-108/ 1

Therefore: χ = 10 + √-108 /1 .or. χ = 10 - √-108/1

You cannot simplify this anymore because you cannot to the square root of a negative.
