I am a 31 yr old mom who is trying to help my daughter with her Algebra homework and I do not understand how you do math without any numbers. Can you please help me?

A boy had d-dimes. How many dollars did he have? How may cents? Can you please tell me how to figure this out?

  1. i think here D is representing a variable.

    i could be wrong,

    but if i'm not,

    he had:

    D/10 dollars (D divided by 10)

    he had 10xD cents.

    for example, if D=200,

    200/10=20, so he had $20

    and 10x200=1000 cents.

  2. Sure if you have issues just looking at alphabet letters try plugging in numbers and then figure out what happens. For example if you had 10 dimes how many dollars do you have (one dollar) From that you can that if you divide 10 dimes by 10 you can figure out how many dollars you have. So if you have d dimes you have d divided by 10 dimes (or d/10). Same goes for cents. 10 dimes equals 100 pennies you multiplied by 10 to get that answer so if you have d dimes you have 100 times d cents (100 d). CORRECTION you have 10 times d cents (10 d).

This is how I had to figure out when I had pre algebra before it made sense. Just think about numbers because that's what you're used to when working with math and eventually it should become easier to see relationship among the letters.

the letter d just represents an unknown number of dimes. So it's really just making a formula to figure out that stuff. Than you can plug in any number of dimes into the equation and you can get the answer. For such a problem it's really just practice because obviously when you're at a bank and you need to exchange money you don't think well now I have to multiply to exchange its natural. 3 20's = 6 10 dollar bills.

  3. well its just asking to convert from the dimes to what you have in dollars

so say, if you had 200 dimes, you would have 20 dollars? this is common sence

this is worked out by deviding the dimes into dollars, so d dimes in dollars would be D/10

cents is the same, each dime is worth 10cents, you would have 10xD cents

  4. has how many dimes?

  5. i do algebra one. trust me. d10 or 10d becase there are ten cents in a dime or ten dimes in a dollar

they dont always make a number, its just an equation

  6. If d = the number of dimes he has, then the number of dollars he has is a multiple of the number of dimes and how many cents would be a similar idea.

    For instance, let's say he has 5 dimes, therefore d = 5

So, since we know how money works, that obviously means he has $0.50 or 1/2 of a dollar.  However, less obvious is the relationship between the number of dimes and a dollar and being able to put that in algebraic form.  It isn't that difficult, we just tend to make it too hard in our heads, so here goes:  since there are 10 dimes per dollar, and if d is the number of dimes, then the number of dollars is:

    dollar/10 dimes  x  number of dimes =

    dollar/10 dimes x d =

    d/10

So, back to our example above, if we have 5 dimes, then how many dollars do we have?  d/10 = 5/10 = 1/2 dollar

The same thinking goes for cents.  There are 10 cents in a dime, so:

10 cents/dime x number of dimes = 10 cents/dime x d = 10 x d = 10d (note that we don't usually show the multiplication symbol between the integer and the letter, it is just assumed that it is multiplied)

So, in the example above, if we have 5 dimes, then d = 5 and so we have:

    10d = 10 x 5 = 50 cents

So, the number of dollars is d/10 and the number of cents is 10d.

    Hope this helps!
