I have a 45 minute timed test coming up and we can't use our calculators. So, I would really appreciate it if you could explain to me in steps how you got the answers. Thanks. =D

Find the reciprocal and the opposite of each number.

  1. 29. √x − 1 = 7

    Try to get the x by itself,

    √x = 7 + 1

    √x = 8

    x = 8^2

    x = 64

    30. √2x + 16 = 5

          Ã¢ÂˆÂš2x =  5 - 16

          Ã¢ÂˆÂš2x = -11

           2x = -11^2

           2x = 121

           x = 121/2 = 60 and 1/2

    31. (3x + 1)² = 144

          Open up brackets,

          (3x+1) (3x+1) = 144

    9x^2 + 6x + 1 = 144

    9x^2 + 6x - 143

    Factorise the expression (I cant factorise sorry)

    35. 36^(1/2)  is same as  Ã¢ÂˆÂš36.   ( examples:  25^(1/2) = √25,

                                                  8^(2/3) = cube root of 8 squared,3√8^2)

    36. 8^(1/3) is same as cube root of 3 which is 2

    40. The rule for this is to just multiply the powers together so answer would be 25x^4

    41. Answer is x

    43.  (2x − 5)²

      = (2x - 5) (2x-5)

    Open up the brackets,

    4x^2 - 20x + 25 = 0

    Factorise to find solutions,

    Im not sure if the answers are all correct
