Question:

Can you please indentify my antique Kewpie Doll, it's age, and approximate worth?

I found this doll in my grandma's garage rafters. The doll has been with me since 1989. He has been a faithful companion! He suffered a little damage to the head while in storage (I think from heat).

His head is like a paper mache-like material that's painted. He's got the "wings" on his neck, and his body is cloth.

The body is about 16 inches long. The entire length of the doll is 24 inches (with head).

Any help would be most appreciated! I want to know the maker, and age of the doll and if you can, the approximate worth.

Thanks-so-much!

  1. Here is some information to start you on: At the end I will tell you who I think made your doll

1913 Kewpie, 2 1/2 - 12" tall, first ones were all bisque and made by German manufacturer's J.D. Kestner and others and may bear their company marking.

All composition Kewpie's have a red paper heart label on chest: Kewpie/Reg. U.S./Pat. Off., or Kewpie/Design Pat./No. 43680/Reg. U.S./Pat. Off., Kewpie/Des. & Copyright/by/Rosie O'Neil ( she was a famous American Artist or illustrator cartoons to paper dolls the list goes on), some are signed on the foot "O'Neill", otherwise they are unmarked.

Side glancing eyes, pursed closed mouth, molded painted top knot hair and one side wisp on each side of head, jointed at the shoulders, legs are molded together.

I believe you doll was manufactured by New York City and Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, they made the cloth body and the compo head about 1913-1921

I would go to the library and or start with the sight I listed below. My bood say 250.00 mint condition
