  1. Bipolar II disorder is defined as the presence of a hypomanic or major depressive episode with a history of hypomanic or major depressive episodes that causes significant distress or impairment.

Symptoms of bipolar disorders include mania, hypomania, depression, and mixed episodes. Mania is “characterized by abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood for at least one week, accompanied by at least 3 additional characteristic symptoms, including inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, pressured speech, flight of ideas, distractibility, increased involvement in goal-directed activities or psychomotor agitation, and excessive involvement in pleasurable activities with a high potential for painful consequences” (Chung et al., 2007).  Depression is defined as a low, sad state marked by significant levels of sadness, lack of energy, low self-worth, guilt, (Comer, 2008) and hopelessness.  Hypomania symptoms are similar to those of mania, but are less intense and of a shorter duration (Chung et al., 2007). Mixed episodes meet the criteria for both mania and depression, except for the duration of at least a 1-week period (Chung et al., 2007).

  2. Bipolar II is when someone has at least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode in their life.

A hypomanic episode=4 or consecutive days of high levels of energy, elevated and/or irritated mood outside of normal mood fluctuation. It is not as bad as a full blown manic episode and tends not to cause impairment.

A major depressive episode= 14 or more consecutive days of abnormally depressed mood (not caused by a tragic event), that involves sadness, abnormal appetite, low energy etc.

So if individual has both of these episodes at least once for each, at some point in their life (it could be 20 years between  each episode, the time between each doesn't matter) then that person has bipolar II.

Bipolar I on the other hand requires just one manic episode at some point in the person's life. Bipolar I tends be more severe.
