Can you plug a microphone into a headphones socket?

my stereo doesnt have a microphone jack and the speakers are plugged in by wires. could i buy an adapter so i could use my microphone in my headphone jack.??

NOP. Won't work. I've tried that more than once in my elementry and middle school days.

Absolutely not.  The headphone jack sends a signal OUT.  You need something to receive a signal IN.

You can, but they are two different types of jacks.  The headphone in an output source, while the microphone is an input source.  If you plug the microphone into a headphone jack you will get some sound out of the microphone.  That's about it.
