Can you prove that ferrets can be legally kept in California if they were imported from another state?

A lot of people (including myself) have asked the question if ferrets can be kept in California if they were imported from another state.

Can anyone please actually back up your answers if you believe that ferrets can be kept as pets in California if imported from another state?

(List some websites or anything)

If I am able to find enough support, I will definitely get a ferret (the legal way).

  1. Ferrets are illegal in CA, period. There's no legal way to own one (however, the last site I have listed below says you can get a permit to keep them legally, but it's VERY difficult to obtain one - this is the first I've read about a permit to keep them legally, so I'm not sure how accurate that is). Many people in CA do own ferrets, but they do not have them legally and they would lose their ferrets if the wrong person found out about it.

Here's some sites with info on ferrets in CA:

  2. 2118. It is unlawful to import, transport, possess, or release alive into this state, except under a revocable, nontransferable permit as provided in this chapter and the regulations pertaining thereto, any wild animal of the following species:

    (b) Class Mammalia (mammals)

    Order Primates

All species except those in family Homonidae

    Order Carnivora (carnivores)

All species, except domestic dogs (Canis familiaris)

    and domestic cats (Felis catus).

Mammals of the orders Primates, Edentata, Dermoptera, Monotremata, Pholidota, Tubulidentata, Proboscidea, Perissodactyla, Hyracoidea, Sirenia and Carnivora are restricted for the welfare of the animals, except animals of the families Viverridae and Mustelidae in the order Carnivora are restricted because such animals are undesirable and a menace to native wildlife, the agricultural interests of the state, or to the public health or safety.

  3. Last I heard, you cannot even bring a ferret over the CA state line, so I'm sure it's the same with imported ferrets. None allowed.

  4. You are not allowed to have a ferret as a pet in California period.  But I do anyways.
